Narisawa
The first fine dining meal I had for my 40th birthday was at Narisawa, this has held ranking as one of the top Asian restaurants in the World for decades and currently holds 2 Michelin stars. This is a spot well worth making a detour for, and on this occasion we were lucky enough to meet Chef Yoshihiro Narisawa himself.
We did the half course lunch tasting menu and it still took a few hours. It started quite unusually with “bread of the forest”, which was literally the starter of the bread that would be prepared fresh at our table. It took some time and was quite the show but the bread was excellent as you can imagine. The Rosy Seabass rice was delicious, and a reminder that rice itself can be quite the delicacy when done right. Having said that, anything that comes with Nori and wasabi I’m going to love. The Eel and Mangangi green pepper was also a pleasant surprise, I’m never sure if I can eat a ton of eel, but this had that perfect crispy skin and tender smoky meat. I’m sure I’ve never had better eel in my life. Finally, the Kobe beef to finish before our dessert was better than advertised which is saying something for such a well respected establishment. With impeccable service, attention to detail, a killer wine/sake pairing, and a beautiful dining space. Narisawa is a worthy detour if in Tokyo in a sea of restaurants that are worth detouring for!
