Sushi Asaba

Sushi Asaba was the second recommendation for omakase from my brother. This time I wasn’t dining alone, I went with my older brother and cousin. Once again, a tiny eatery where it was just 8 seats. Thankfully the sous chef spoke a bit of English so was able to communicate clearly what was happening and how special some of the pieces were. For example, we got to try two very different types of uni, we ate grilled white fish that they showed us swimming in a fish bowl at super speed before being crisped to perfection for us. The ebi we had was so soft and flavourful, you could tell from the first bite that all these pieces are insanely fresh. We had a few different types of sake during the meal, my cousin was reaching capacity early so I was sneaking her food as well as it would be criminal to let any of this go to waste. One cheeky detail was the fact the chef wanted to spoil all of us with a shot of maple tequila produced in Japan, served in an ice cold shot glass it was very smooth and this is coming from someone who loathes tequila. Start to finish, the sushi is on another level, the sushi rice has no sugar in it, it’s sweetened by different types of vinegar which they showed me. As far as family gatherings go, I can get behind these kind. Walk don’t run.
