Tatar Bunar
Tatar Bunar is a Ukrainian inspired restaurant that touches on dishes throughout the region, but with a particular focus on the South West. Our friend Viktoriya (who is Ukrainian) has wanted to try this place and we were more than happy to oblige on a Sunday. The restaurant is in the still trendy Shoreditch area, it’s a beautiful space with an open kitchen, terrace, and a generally warm buzzy vibe. The table behind us was getting ON IT, wine and revelry, gotta respect it on a Sunday.
We started with a shot of vodka served in an ice cold glass, washed that down with Uzvar which is like a winter punch, both were excellent and a good start to the meal. We deffered to the expert here to order and she did not disappoint, we had pickled tomatoes and pickled fish, again two things I would normally not be so keen on, but damn they were excellent. The fish in particular had such an interesting texture, and eating it with pickled onion and potatoes was a perfect marriage. My favourite dish though was the Plachinda with bryndza. Essentially Ukrainian street food, which in this case is deep fried bread and cheese; absolutely banging! We had to try the Borscht which is a sharing dish, it’s simple, comforting, and hits the spot. We were stuffed but found room to try their crepes, served in three, it has three different fillings, all delicious, with different textures to keep it interesting. This is a great spot to try with friends, I’m already thinking about going back as the menu had a few items from the grill we didn’t get to try. Run don’t walk.
