Monk

Netflix chef’s table has hit out some bangers, but one that is burned into my mind is that of Monk. I’d suggest watching the episode, because if you are like me, you’ll be inspired to add this to your must hit food list. Pizza in Japan isn’t a new thing, but the idea of cooking simple food with an open fire is elevated by the genius that is Yoshihiro Imai.

I got a counter seat last minute, the venue is tiny so you can literally hear every conversation both next to you and behind you. Probably the only low light of the meal was hearing all the inane shit people say at restaurants. The meal is as advertised, it’s simple food prepared well. Vegetables from his garden fire prepared in salt and olive oil, some sashimi, and then of course the star of the show, the pizza. The meal moves at pace, slightly clinical from a service point of view, but I was pumped to practice my Japanese at the end of the meal with Yoshihiro and he was kind enough to indulge me and answer a few questions. As this restaurant is along the Philosopher’s path, take the time to stroll along before your meal to really get yourself into a meditative mindset. Walk don’t run.
