Gruta

After a long COVID lockdown, one of our first holiday breaks was Porto. You don’t realise how much you miss the sun until you’re in a place like Porto, strolling around in shorts, sunglasses, and in my case most likely complaining about the heat. You really can’t go wrong eating in Porto, but one of the more surprising meals we ate at was at this tiny place called Gruta. Tucked away in an alleyway, this gem of a place is well worth a stop if in Porto. Chef Rafaela Louzada, a Carioca from Rio but with Portuguese roots focuses on seafood dishes which did not disappoint. All the food is reasonably priced and expertly prepared, we even had a brief chat with the chef Rafaela who popped out to greet customers. A very personable, relaxed, and hip restaurant awaits you in Porto, sit back with a glass of wine and indulge yourself. Start with the Knife shrimp in salsa verde, generous portions of shrimp that are perfectly balanced with the fresh parsley and coriander. Finish with the Sea rice (my favourite), anytime I see the words Seafood broth”, I’m in. Pair all that with the zucchini salad and maybe the langoustine broth, and you will leave with a new appreciation for all things Portuguese seafood.

Price per head: £45 and up depending on drinks per head
