Da Terra

East London has some amazing restaurants, I used to live in Shoreditch and saw it transform over the years from a gritty spot, to an uber hipster locale. That has stretched well into other parts of East London, including Bethnal Green. The Town Hall hotel has seen a lot of change, there was a fantastic restaurant in the hotel called The Typing Room”, sadly they shut shop but Da Terra took over in 2019 and has not looked back, racking up awards and accolades. With two Michelin stars, a sister restaurant in the same hotel offering casual plates, Da Terra is fast becoming one of the most famous restaurants in the city.

Chef Rafael Cagali brings together his Brazilian and Italian heritage to make something really unique. On top of that, the two times we have gone, the menu has had a strong focus on seafood which we love. The Sommelier Maria is fantastic, as I’ve done the wine pairing both times and they were exceptional. This is a tasting menu only and conservatively takes 3 hours to complete, so I’d suggest going for lunch so you don’t exit the restaurant at midnight.

The snacks, much like Restaurant Story are excellent, so you know you are in very capable hands before the first course comes out. I’m glad to see that a number of their dishes have stayed on the menu over the years including the sourdough dish, if you know me you know I love bread, and the sourdough here is excellent, especially since it comes with a side of bone marrow. The dish to me that really tells the story of Da Terra, is the Moqueca, which is a delicious seafood stew. With turbot, shrimp, peppers, farofa, manteiguinha beans, all mixing around in a golden colour soup base. It’s a very eye catching and delicious main, they make a point to show you what the pot of stew looks like before presenting the stew in an individual plate. This dish showcases all that’s wonderful about Da Terra, if you’re lucky Chef Cagali will bring it out himself and explain the history of the dish.

A relaxed atmosphere, knowledgable staff, and a beautiful dining space. Da Terra is a wonderful place to spend a Saturday afternoon.
