Brat

I love cuisine from the basque region and Brat has a focus on this region. Entering via a discreet door on Redchurch Street, a short walk upstairs leads you to an open dining space where their wood fire grill and staff are on full display, you’ll even walk by the basque cheesecake which I’ll get to later. Brat is a one Michelin star, world Top 50 restaurant that racks up accolades like it’s nobody’s business!

I’ve had the pleasure of dining twice, the first time we focused on the seafood portion of the menu and that was astounding, the second time I dined here I focused on the meat (forgive me planet earth). The standout dish the first time I dined here was the velvet crab soup, which lets be honest is as descriptive as I need to get. It’s beautifully presented and all that fat and oil from the brain of the crab soaks into the soup. The grilled breads are also quite interesting, in some ways it reminded me of an Indian Puri in texture. The second dining experience was all about the Beef Rib, I’ve dined at specialist venues that focus on steak like Hawksmoor, Goodman’s, and the Beast, to name a few, but Brat beats them all. The meat being perfectly prepared over the wood fire grill, the cuts were juicy, tender, and the fat so perfectly marbled. You simply can not go wrong with their selection here. I’d be remiss to not mention the sides, vegetarians rejoice! The wood roasted greens come with finely grated Parmesan, the smoked potatoes with herbs and sea salt perfectly mop up the juices from the beef rib. Again, these are simple sides cooked perfectly that you can’t help but ask yourself Why don’t my veg sides turn out like this?”

If you’ve ever been to San Sebastián you may have had the cheesecake from La Vina, Brat does their own cheesecake and it’s well worth saving some room for it. This is a great spot for a work lunch, date, or catching up with friends. It’s got a low key vibe in the heart of Shoreditch and has a friendly vibe, albeit chaotic given the layout of the restaurant. I’m a big fan of Blank Street Coffee, so if you have any room left, pop over and get their Orange Mocha!
