KOL

My experience with Mexican food was pretty limited until I moved to London. I think my first experience was going to Mestizo” which has easily been around more than fifteen years now. However, it wasn’t until I went to KOL that I really started to develop an appreciation for Mexican food. The restaurant is all about using British produce and re-imagining Mexican cuisine, a bold idea but, one the team here does brilliantly. At the time of writing this, I’ve now gone to KOL four times! As they focus on sustainability, the menu changes depending on the season, I won’t lie, I would definitely suggest going when Polpo is in season, as it may be the best Polpo I’ve ever had. They offer two set menus, a short (6 dishes) and a long (9 dishes). We generally opt for the short and add an additional course if something catches our eye, this time around we did which was a cheese course.

The crab chilpachole was the first dish and it was delicious, presented as a tiny crispy sandwich, the mix of fresh crab, scotch bonnet and gooseberries is a wild and unusual combination. Their Langoustine taco where (Theme alert), you crush the head of the shrimp onto the taco was another stand out dish. The mains at KOL are to be shared, so the table as a whole has to decide what to do, normally here I’d suggest if Polpo is on the menu, go for it! This time though it wasn’t, so we opted for the Lamb which was excellent. Served with fresh tortillas, fermented shallots, and a mix of sauces to compliment, it’s a memorable end to a very enjoyable meal. Drinks wise, they do a ton of Mezcal inspired cocktails so do indulge in one or ten.

The dessert was Flan and the aforementioned cheese course, the latter was quite interesting as the cheese had been prepared almost like an ice cream, where we dipped a crispy flat like Churro. Again, all very unusual but delicious! With a Michelin star, a mezcal bar in the basement, and incredibly friendly and attentive staff. You’ll be hard pressed to find a spot you can’t spend hours in, especially as those mezcal cocktails hit you. Four times and counting, I’m sure I’ll get to double digits in no time.

Price per head: £125 and up depending on those cocktails!
