Akoko

West African food is rightfully having its moment, and long may this continue! If you’re looking for something in the fine dining space but won’t set you back like Ikoyi, Akoko is a great shout for lunch. It’s a relatively small dining space, beautiful wooden tables, small bar in the back, and very welcoming staff.

If you do the full tasting option, you’ll enjoy all the snacks that are the hallmark of a great establishment. I’ve said it before, but you can’t go wrong with Jollof rice and Akoko does this splendidly. For me though, the standout dish is the Suya, or BBQ hogget belly. Chargrilled with suya spice, it’s juicy, fatty, and delightful. Akoko also does a great wine pairing with some unusual choices, everything from a Czech Republic ice cider, to a EKO Golder lager, the pairing definitely keeps the whole experience very interesting. If you’re lucky enough, you may get to try the Iru Miso ice cream, iru is defined as a fermented locust bean. That may put you off, but I assure you it’s one of the more unusual and delicious desserts you’ll ever try! Akoko is a wonderful addition to the food scene, and being smack in the middle of Fitzrovia means you have a number of great drinking options after to partake in.

Price per head: £60 and up for lunch, dinner would set you back £150 and up depending if you do drinks.
