Dai Chi

Writing about food has given me some obvious insights, one that I will call out is that my go to location for food is always in and around Soho. I keep telling myself I need to explore more around London but Soho has so much to offer!

I love a tasting menu, something about not having to pick through a myriad of options is rather comforting. Dai Chi offers a 6 and 8 course Omakase menu, we decided to go with 8 and it was a safe choice, as we didn’t leave feeling utterly stuffed. The menu is quite varied between meat and seafood, so if you enjoy Japanese cooking with a variety of proteins you’re in luck. A few things stand out at the restaurant, and oddly enough I’ll start with the soundtrack which was a very eclectic mix of jazz and retro covers. I normally don’t notice the music but it really did add to the vibe. The cocktails were also outstanding, my Buttered down” cocktail was a mix of Whisky, Soy butter Marsala, and honey. They literally melted butter into this cocktail, clarified it out and what was left was the most unusual Smokey whisky based cocktail I’ve ever tasted. The Shinjuku Albatross” with smoked pineapple and mezcal was delicious, I’m partial to any chill based cocktail.

The food was equally memorable, the Hokkaido milk buns with soft shell crab were perfect. The soft doughy bun mixing with the crunchy battered crab, not a false note to be found. The steamed egg with Prawn & Shitake was incredible, especially since it had a hint of Yuzu. Finally, my favourite dessert is cheesecake, and we were lucky enough to get their white chocolate and miso cheesecake. Generally anything white chocolate would be too sweet but this was just right and perfectly creamy with the crumble around it for texture.

Dai Chi is a solid find and provides a lot of variety, bang for your buck, and a very cool soundtrack to enjoy your meal too. They offer their meals with a pairing of wine or sake, but the cocktails are so damn good you may just stick to them throughout your meal.
